Important Information about Prescribing of Injectable Treatments

A number of clinics and nurses are adminstering wrinkle reduction injections in breach of guidelines issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The NMC makes it quite clear that  nurses MUST only administer these products to a client following an assessment by a Doctor – the Doctor should have consulted the client face to face beforehand and advised as suitable for treatment,  following which a clear direction must be drawn up and placed in the client’s records. Independent nurse prescribers must also not prescribe these products if the use ‘off licence’ – which is the case for most treatments.

All Doctors have been advised by the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors that the prescribing of these products ‘remotely’ (that is without seeing the patient) is no longer to be promoted or supported by the organisation (letter 20 Apr 2011). Any Member who continues this practice will be dismissed from the organisation.

The NMC exists to safeguard patients and offer support for nurses. Hyde Park Clinic adheres to its advice and all new clients must see the clinic’s Doctor before wrinkle reduction treatment is initiated. Any nurse who goes against the Council’s advice is behaving unethically and runs the risk of losing his or her registration. The guidance issued  in April 2011 follows:

New advice for nurses and midwives

Nurses and midwives who prescribe or administer wrinkle reduction injections and other injectable cosmetic medicinal products have been issued with new advice from their regulator, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The advice, Remote prescribing and injectable cosmetic medicinal products , makes clear the NMC’s position that remote prescriptions or directions to administer should not be used to administer injectable cosmetic medicinal products such as botulinum toxin. 

 The advice supports the NMC’s Standards for Medicines Management and was developed in partnership with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). It reflects a growing industry where nurses and midwives work more independently, and often run their own practice.

 All nurses and midwives are personally responsible to ensure they apply the relevant standards and laws to their specific area of practice and risk their registration and livelihood if they do not.  

 NMC Director of Policy and Standards, Roger Thompson said:

“I would strongly urge nurses and midwives working in aesthetic practice to read this advice in conjunction with the NMC’s Standards for Medicines Management.

“As the regulator for the UK’s 660,000 nurses and midwives, we are committed to safeguarding the public. This advice will support the registered nurses and midwives working in the field of aesthetic practice to make sure their local policies are fully compliant with the standards.”
